Hanley’s 100th Apprentice – 1 Year On

One year ago today, Hanley Calibration marked a significant milestone in our journey of growth and development—we registered our 100th apprentice, Barbora! This achievement was a testament to our commitment to investing into the future of our industry. The occasion was made even more special as we celebrated alongside Minister Simon Harris, who has been a long standing supporter of Apprenticeship Programmes.

To celebrate this milestone, we decided to catch up with Barbora and see what she has been up to over the past year. Her journey is a reflection of the dedication and opportunities that Hanley Calibration strives to provide for all our Apprentices.

Barbora’s Journey so far as an Instrumentation Apprentice at Hanley

From day one, Barbora has embodied the qualities we look for in our apprentices—curiosity, dedication, and a passion for learning. Over the past year, she has immersed herself in various aspects of the Calibration field, working closely with our experienced technicians and continuously expanding her skill set.

One of the key elements of our apprenticeship program is hands-on experience. Barbora has been involved in numerous projects, from routine calibrations to intricate investigations, gaining invaluable practical knowledge.

“I am working in the calibration department in the Pharmaceutical Industry. We calibrate varies types of instruments including temperature, pressure, humidity, flow and mass. The best experience over the past year was assisting a calibration of 12,000 ltr tank using a Calibrated Flowmeter.”

We asked Barbora, “What do you enjoy most about your work in instrumentation?” – I love that every day is different so I never get bored. There is always something new to learn!”. In the world of instrumentation, no two days are alike. It can be characterised by its diversity of tasks and constant challenges, which keeps the work environment stimulating and engaging. For apprentices like Barbora, this variety ensures that there is always something new to explore.

One of the most important impacts of Barbora’s apprenticeship has been the significant boost in her self-confidence. Entering a new field with uncertainty about one’s abilities can be common among apprentices. “When I started, I had zero experience. I used to work in hospitality for years. It has opened up a whole new experience in engineering for me!”

Each successful task, every problem solved, and each new skill mastered has contributed to her growing confidence. This self-assurance is invaluable, not only in her professional life but also for her personal growth, enabling her to face challenges with a positive and proactive attitude. “It improved my confidence. I can see now that I am able to do things which I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do.”

What advice would you give to someone considering an Apprenticeship in Instrumentation?

“If you are thinking about it, go for it. Even if you are not sure if it is the right career path for you. There is nothing to lose. With Hanley, you will go through 3 month trial to make sure instrumentation is really something you enjoy to do before officially registering as apprentice. If I could go back in time, I would have started my apprenticeship years ago.”

As Barbora continues her Apprenticeship journey with us, we are excited to support her in every new challenge she faces. Her experience is a testament to the exciting and fulfilling career that awaits those who choose the path of Instrumentation. At Hanley Calibration, we are committed to ensuring that our apprentices never stop learning and never stop growing.
