Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure used to ensure that machines are properly shut off and cannot be started up again before the completion of maintenance or servicing work. This procedure is crucial for protecting workers from hazardous energy releases.

Lockout – involves placing a physical lock on the energy isolation device to keep the equipment in a safe or off position. The lock ensures that the equipment cannot be turned on while maintenance or repairs are being carried out.

Tagout – involves placing a tag on the energy isolation device indicating that the equipment is being worked on and should not be operated. The tag serves as a warning and provides information about who is performing the maintenance.
